The US State Department is set to share official documents relating to the 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Rep. Michael McCaul requested the release of documents pertaining to the chaotic withdrawal of the US from Afghanistan in August 2021 under President Biden. Similar requests by the committee have been made in the past, but yielded no results as the Biden administration allegedly withheld said documents.

The current Republican majority on the committee will inevitably pressure the State Department to comply with the request, something it had so far avoided given the prior Democrat majority. Information surrounding the clumsy operation and its dire aftermath for the Afghan people will certainly affect the credibility of President Biden and his administration, which explains the Republican enthusiasm in this endeavor.

Renewed lack of compliance by the State Department is likely to result in a subpoena, something the Biden administration will want to avoid. The requested documents are therefore likely to be released on time, despite the long-lasting political cost to Biden and Democrats alike. The campaign is more than likely to tarnish the incumbent president’s reputation, and the Democrat’s chances in the 2024 elections.
